FAQ

How long does it take to get my custom orthotics once I order them?

Most orthotic inserts arrive at Village Wellness 2-3 weeks after ordering.  Custom orthotic shoes take between 4-6 weeks to arrive.

How are custom orthotics different from foot inserts at retail stores?

Inserts at retail stores often serve the purpose of increasing comfort but they are meant for a generic foot in order to accommodate the most people in the general public.  A custom orthotic is exactly that, an insert made specifically for you that takes into account the reason it is created, your foot and lower limb anatomy and how your body moves when walking and running.

Do children benefit from custom orthotics?

Children generally do not need custom orthotics until the age of 6 as the foot anatomy changes several times thru the course of infancy, non-weight bearing movement, wide stance clumsy walking and finally into the weight bearing biomechanics that persist into adulthood.  However if a child does not develop a normal arch by this age, has persistent toeing-in,  has persistent awkward or non-efficient gait, orthotics may be needed.  Special attention should be paid to those involved in athletics and sports activities as custom orthotics can provide arch support and improve gait and running performance significantly.  For most children sensible, flexible shoes that are flat, light weight and have enough room will be sufficient.

Do I have to get a different pair of orthotics for my different shoes?

There are several categories which orthotics can be created for: dress shoes, athletic shoes, sports specific goals, casual shoes and work shoes.  Some orthotics are more multi-use friendly than others and your goals would have to be discussed with your clinician at the time of your appointment.

For example a woman’s dress orthotic is thinner and more narrow to accommodate the style of most female dress shoes; which is different than an orthotic she may use in her running shoe which is often bulkier and often meant to have more shock absorbing capability.

I’ve had orthotics before and they were uncomfortable. What if the same thing happens again?

The technology which is used to create orthotics has come along greatly in recent years.  The introduction of software which has gait analysis properties means that custom orthotics are created with dynamic movement in mind rather just the shape of the foot.  Also many people who have had a poor orthotic experience in the past were not given proper instruction on how to use them as they are a therapeutic device.  The practitioners at Village Wellness will work with you to create and allow you to use the best orthotic for you personally.

How do I clean my orthotics?

Orthotics at Village Wellness comes with either a leather or suede top layer.  Each should be generally cared for by avoiding extreme heat, direct sunlight, or wet environments.  If they do become wet let them dry naturally at room temperature. You can clean them by wiping lightly with a damp soapy cloth and can control odour and perspiration by sprinkling baby powder or foot powder over the entire orthotic.

Can I use my orthotics right away?

When first wearing orthotics, you are asking your body to change and correct walking patterns acquired over a lifetime.  This will not happen instantly.  To adjust slowly and comfortably to obtain maximum benefit from your orthotics you should break them in little by little:

· On the first day wear them only an hour around the house office or for a short walk

· On day two wear them two hours, if you find them uncomfortable before two hours stop wearing them

· Each day wear them a little more until you can tolerate them for long periods

· If your orthotics was prescribed for a specific sport follow the same principles, wear them for short distances or duration and slowly increase this amount

Some people may experience slight discomfort in their low back, hips or knees when wearing their orthotics.  If this occurs decrease the time or distance you are wearing the orthotics for and slowly increase it at a later time . If these symptoms persist speak to your health care provider.

Do I need a referral for orthotics?

You do not need a referral for a pair of orthotics unless stated in your third party insurance for re-imbursement.

How much do orthotics cost?

A pair of custom orthotic inserts are $320, A pair of custom orthotic shoes are $420.  You can see a catalogue at Village Wellness for selection of custom orthotic shoes.  There are no tax on orthotics.

Do I have to pay for my orthotics up front or when they come in?

You are required to pay for the orthotics in full at the time of ordering.

What if I don’t like my orthotics when they arrive?

Occasionally your custom orthotic may need an adjustment or repair.  If this occurs return your orthotics to Village Wellness where you will be re-assessed and your orthotics will be sent off for modification if deemed appropriate.  Please be sure to follow the break-in instructions as given to you by your Village Wellness practitioner as this is often the source of ‘poor orthotic results’.

How long are custom orthotics good for?

Most patients wear the same pair of orthotics for 1-2 years prior to re-assessment.
